Commonwealth Games: British High Commission Hails Team Uganda’s Sacrifice

The Deputy British High Commissioner to Uganda, Tiffany Kirlew, has called on Ugandan athletes to give their very best as Team Uganda prepares to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The athletes were hosted at a colourful send-off reception held at the British High Commission residence in Kololo, where officials, coaches, and administrators gathered to celebrate the team’s journey to one of the biggest sporting events in the Commonwealth.

The move is expected to further strengthen Sporting ties between the two nations, just weeks after Uganda officially joined the Invictus Games Foundation as the 26th member nation and the first in East Africa.

Speaking during the Commonwealth Games send-off event on Thursday, Kirlew praised the dedication and commitment of Uganda’s athletes, describing their participation in Glasgow as a proud moment for both countries.

“We are very proud to be sending Team Uganda, a delegation of more than 50 athletes to Glasgow for what will be an extraordinary moment in Commonwealth sporting history,” Kirlew said.

She highlighted the role of the British High Commission’s “More in Common” campaign, which allowed members of her team to engage with Ugandan athletes during their preparations.

“Through our ‘More in Common’ campaign, our team had the privilege of stepping into the athletes’ world, whether lifting weights, training in the pool, or stepping into the boxing ring,” she said.

“Seeing their dedication, long hours of training, and the immense sacrifices made by their families and coaches has been truly inspiring.”

Kirlew encouraged the athletes to embrace the opportunity and represent Uganda with confidence as they head to Glasgow.

“Do your best because you are the best, and please feel at home while in Glasgow. You will be treated fairly and equally and given a huge welcome,” she told the team.

Team Uganda will compete in ten sports disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, including Para Swimming, Para Powerlifting, Athletics, Basketball 3×3, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Swimming, Track Cycling, and Weightlifting.

The delegation will include more than 50 athletes, among them five para-athletes, making it the most inclusive Team Uganda in Commonwealth Games history.

The team’s participation also comes at a historic moment for the Commonwealth Games. For the first time ever, the opening medal of the entire Games will be awarded in a para-sport event, with Para Powerlifting taking centre stage.

That milestone will mark Glasgow 2026’s commitment to inclusion and will place para-athletes at the heart of the competition from the very beginning.
