Maroons FC’s Luzira Prisons Ground is among the stadiums that have been deemed unfit to host Uganda Premier League matches for the 2026/27 season after failing to meet the FUFA Club Licensing requirements.
According to FUFA’s inspection report, the stadium fell short in several critical areas related to player safety, infrastructure, and match-day facilities.
FUFA noted that the playing surface requires extensive maintenance, including turf spiking, levelling, pest management, raking, mowing, and rolling to bring it up to the required standard.
The federation also raised concerns over the stadium’s drainage system, saying the basic drainage channels remain uncovered, creating a significant safety risk for players.
Other shortcomings identified include technical benches that are in a poor state of repair, substandard dressing rooms for players and match officials, and inadequate sanitary facilities for both home and away supporters.
FUFA further cited the need for improvements to the stadium’s surrounding environment, the absence of a designated media working area, and the lack of a permanent external perimeter fence, all of which must be addressed before the venue can be approved for top-flight football.
Maroons FC responds:
In response, Maroons FC acknowledged FUFA’s communication and confirmed that renovation works are already underway at Luzira Prisons Ground.
The club, in a statement, expressed confidence that the ongoing upgrades will be completed before the start of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season, allowing the stadium to fully comply with FUFA’s licensing requirements.
“Maroons FC respects the licensing process and remains fully committed to fulfilling every aspect of FUFA’s Club Licensing requirements,” the club said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Maroons will turn their attention to the FUFA Super 8 tournament, where they are scheduled to face SC Villa on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Omondi Stadium.
