Uganda’s National Netball team, the She Cranes, begin their 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign on Saturday against Wales — with hopes of going one better than their fifth-place finish in Birmingham 2022.
The She Cranes stunned higher-ranked Jamaica on their way to fifth in 2022, and now find themselves in Group B with Jamaica again, alongside world No.2 New Zealand, Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, and Wales.
Their clash with Wales is a repeat of the 2018 Gold Coast meeting, where Uganda won convincingly 76-40.
Uganda currently sits 6th in the world rankings, one place above Wales in 7th.
The team also finished fifth at the 2023 Netball World Cup after edging South Africa 49-47 in the placement match.
Wales finished 9th at that tournament, beating Scotland 57-42.
Under head coach Rashid Mubiru, five players return from the 2022 squad: Mary Nuba, Shaffie Nalwanja, Margaret Baagala, Shadiah Nassanga and Hanisha Muhammad.
Veteran Rachael Nanyonga, who featured in 2018, returns and will captain the side.
Notable omissions from the final 12 are Christine Nakitto, Faridah Kadondi and Christine Namulumba.
Note – This is the third edition that Uganda She Cranes is competing at the Commonwealth Games after their debut in 2018 when they came sixth.
