Husnah Kukundakwe made history on Monday night by becoming the first Ugandan swimmer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The 19-year-old Paralympian claimed silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB8 final after clocking 1:26.20 at the Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
England’s Brock Whiston won gold in 1:22.05, while Kukundakwe produced another outstanding performance to secure Uganda’s first-ever swimming medal at the Games.
Earlier in the day, Kukundakwe qualified for the final as the third-fastest swimmer from the heats, posting a time of 1:27.38 behind Whiston (1:27.02) and England’s 15-year-old Iona Winnifrith (1:27.04).
Competing at her second Commonwealth Games, Kukundakwe arrived in Glasgow confident of challenging for a podium finish, having consistently ranked among the world’s top swimmers in her classification this year.
The silver medal is another milestone in an already groundbreaking career.
Kukundakwe previously became the first Ugandan swimmer to qualify on merit for the Paralympic Games and the World Championships, and also won Uganda’s first-ever swimming medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey, in 2023.
