Uganda women’s national basketball team, the Gazelles, clinched a historic silver medal in the 3×3 Basketball event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Gazelles fell 21-11 to Australia in the final at the SEC on Wednesday, missing out on Gold after a spirited display against the tournament favourites.
Uganda had earlier in the day secured a place in the final after a dominant 21-09 victory over New Zealand in the semifinal, guaranteeing themselves a medal in their maiden Commonwealth Games appearance.
Having suffered a 21-09 defeat to Australia in the group stages, Nicholas Natuhereza’s side entered the final as underdogs.

However, they produced a much-improved performance against a physically stronger Australian team featuring Amy Atwell, Lara McSpadden and Marena Whittle. Emma Clarke missed the final due to a. Injury.
Melisa Akullu led Uganda’s scoring with seven points, while Jamila Nansikombi added three and Jane Asinde contributed one in the defeat. Perus Nyamwenge failed to contribute on scoring in the final despite her impressive effort in earlier rounds.
Despite falling short of Gold, the silver medal marks a remarkable achievement for the Gazelles, who have made history on their Commonwealth Games debut.
