Shafik Murungi qualified to the Men’s 800M final at the on going U20 World Athletics Championship in Oregon, Eugene, USA.
The promising middle distance runner won semi final one with 1:46.41 beating his PB he set in qualifiers with 23 hundredth of a second.
He headed into semis with the quickest time of 1:46.64 across the five qualifying heat.
He now heads into the finals with the second quickest time behind Kenyans Nashon Pkiach who won semi final two with 1:45.84
Kenyan’s Collin Tajewou who won semifinal three and Morroco’s Imad Bouchajda who finished behind Murungi can also be a threat to Uganda’s podium finish.
But with Murungi’s fast-starting style, which has seen him lead from gun to finish in his two previous races, he stands a strong chance of finishing on the podium.
Murungi will run the final on Sunday morning at 5:08 East African time.
Elsewhere for Ugandans on day 3 of the championship, Dan Kipyeko and Abraham Cherotich finished 12th and 20th respectively in men’s 3000 meter final
