Elijah Luutu and defending champion Cathie Pavie emerged as the early leaders after Friday’s opening round of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Open at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.

Luutu produced the standout performance in the men’s category, carding a level-par 72 on the par-72 course to open up a commanding five-stroke lead.

The Ugandan’s round featured three birdies on holes 6, 13 and 17, while he dropped shots on only two holes to remain firmly in control of his scorecard.

Kenya’s Gurbux Singh finished second on five-over par, one stroke ahead of Uganda’s Hassan Pirani. Joseph Bagabo is fourth on eight-over, while William Otieno and Michael Cleave share fifth on nine-over.

Defending champion Dave Plenderleith endured a difficult start to his title defence, returning 10-over par and leaving himself with significant ground to recover in Saturday’s final round.

In the ladies’ category, Pavie made an early statement in her bid to retain the championship, carding 85 to establish a three-stroke advantage.

The defending champion’s round included a birdie on the fourth hole and gave her a useful cushion heading into the decisive final round.

Rose Azuba is second on 88, with Grace Kabonero third on 91 and Jenina Nasimolo fourth on 92.

A total of 82 golfers participated in the opening round, comprising 71 men and 11 ladies. The field was dominated by players from host club Uganda Golf Club, alongside competitors from across the region.

Attention now turns to Saturday’s final round, when Luutu and Pavie will seek to convert their first-round advantages into championship victories.

The closing day will also feature the subsidiary competitions before the tournament concludes with an Afro-themed 19th Hole experience. Songstress Winnie Nwagi and other performers are scheduled to provide live entertainment as the event draws to a close.
