Uganda has named a strong team of 16 athletes for the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26, with Olympic and world champion Joshua Cheptegei among the leading contenders for gold in the half marathon.
Cheptegei, a multiple Olympic and world gold medalist, headlines the men’s 21-kilometre team, while Charity Cherop is among the leading contenders in the women’s five-kilometre race following her impressive performance at the 2026 World Under-20 Championships, where she won 5,000-metre gold and 3,000-metre bronze.
The Ugandan team was officially flagged off in Kampala today and is scheduled to travel to Denmark later this evening ahead of the championships, which will take place on September 19 and 20.
The strong team entry underlines Uganda’s growing focus on road running and its ambitions on the global stage, following a series of impressive performances in international athletics.
The Copenhagen championships have attracted 496 elite athletes from 85 countries, including 226 women and 270 men. They will compete for individual and team titles in the one-mile, five-kilometre and half-marathon events.
The mass participation races are expected to attract about 65,000 runners.
Uganda’s women’s half-marathon team comprises Esther Chebet, Esther Chekwemoi, Yeko Annet Chemengich Chelangat and Rebecca Chelangat.
The men’s half-marathon team features Cheptegei, Mande Bushendich, Martin Kiprotich and Feb Chelogoi.
In the five-kilometre races, Charity Cherop and Martha Chemutai will represent Uganda in the women’s event, while Alex Kiplangat and Kenneth Kiprop will compete in the men’s race.
Felister Chekwemoi and Patience Cherop will contest the women’s one-mile race, with Silas Chemutai and Hosea Kiprop representing Uganda in the men’s event.
Apollo Musherure is leading the delegation, accompanied by coaches Grace Chesang and Alex Malinga.
