Everything Can Wait: Kampala Catches World Cup Fever

The FIFA World Cup is finally here, and MultiChoice Uganda has ensured fans across the country can fully experience the world’s biggest sporting spectacle through DStv.

For the next few weeks, football lovers will remain glued to their screens, following every goal, upset and dramatic moment.

With some matches kicking off as late as 1am and as early as 5am Ugandan time, routines are being adjusted and sleep sacrificed — perfectly captured by the campaign’s message: “Sleep Can Wait” and “Everything Can Wait.”

Although Uganda Cranes fell short in the qualifiers, finishing behind Algeria in their group, the excitement among local fans is impossible to miss.

Across Kampala and its surrounding areas, MultiChoice Uganda has rolled out a series of activations designed to bring the World Cup experience closer to supporters. The most eye-catching is the giant football boot and ball installation at Airtel Roundabout.

Positioned along one of the city’s busiest roads, the installation has quickly become a landmark, attracting football fans and curious passers-by alike.

“It feels like I am in the United States,” remarked one boda boda rider while admiring the display.

Beyond the city’s major roads, the campaign has reached grassroots football communities. Twenty-five football turfs across Kampala and neighbouring areas have been branded, connecting local players and fans to the global tournament.

These grounds host thousands of football enthusiasts every week, from amateur players and youth teams to friends gathering for evening matches. The branding creates a direct link between everyday football and the sport’s grandest stage.

The campaign has also embraced technology through digital screens displaying match content, live scores and tournament updates, ensuring fans stay connected even while on the move.

As a result, World Cup fever is being felt well beyond television screens. Whether watching from home, playing on a local turf or simply moving around the city, fans are constantly reminded that football’s biggest show is underway.

In a country obsessed with football, particularly the English Premier League, the World Cup has provided the perfect fix until club football returns in August.

Across Kampala, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea jerseys are temporarily giving way to the colours of Brazil, France, England and Portugal as fans embrace the global game once again.
