Spain are the CHAMPIONS of the World.
Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute as Spain defeated 10-man Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing the country’s second world title.
Torres struck from close range after a cross from Pedro Porro and a headed pass from Nico Williams, finally breaking the deadlock in a tightly contested final.
Spain dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the match but were repeatedly denied by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made 11 saves.
Argentina’s task became even harder late in normal time when midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi.
The victory makes Spain the first nation to win both the European Championship and the World Cup twice in successive cycles. Spain also became the first World Cup champion to concede only one goal throughout the tournament.
Lionel Messi, 39, was unable to inspire Argentina to another comeback despite finishing the tournament with eight goals and four assists.
And for Messi, who was tipped to help his side defend the tournament, was in tears as he walked off what appeared to be his last match on a global stage.
The defending champions failed to retain the title after winning the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, 65, became the oldest manager to win the World Cup.
“We are world champions,” de la Fuente said. “It was together we reached this stage.”
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged Spain’s superiority after the match.
“They were the better side—that’s the truth,” Scaloni said. “I’ll always cherish what this team achieved by reaching the final.”
Spain captain Rodri was named the best player of the tournament while his teammates Pau Curbasi (Best Young Player) and Unai Simon (Best Goalkeeper) took home gongs.
The Fairplay award went to Netherlands after they recorded just three yellow cards and red, while the golden boot went to Kylian Mbappe who scored 10 goals.
