Junior Silverbacks Start Hunt for U18 AfroBasket Ticket

Friday, July 24
•Uganda Vs South Sudan – 4:30pm

Uganda will begin their quest for a place at the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket when they face South Sudan in their opening game of the FIBA U18 Zone Five Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

This qualification tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Hoima from June 14-21 before it was moved to Egypt following Uganda’s Ebola outbreak.

The Junior Silverbacks have been drawn in Group B alongside Kenya and South Sudan, while hosts Egypt, Rwanda and Tanzania make up Group A.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, with the tournament winner securing the region’s ticket to the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket, set for August 5-16 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Uganda’s U18 girls’ team, the Junior Gazelles, have already qualified for the continental finals after a good outing in the previous final tournament.

And the Junior Silverbacks, coached by Daniel Najja Juuko and Jonathan Egau, will now look to join them.

Uganda swept both the boys’ and girls’ Zone Five titles when it hosted the championship in Lugogo in 2024.
