Namuwongo Blazers cruised to an 89-62 victory over UCU Canons to take a 1-0 lead in their National Basketball League semifinal playoff series at Lugogo on Friday.
UCU matched the defending champions in the opening quarter as the teams were tied 17-17, but the Blazers took control in the second period, outscoring the Canons 29-14 to open up a 46-31 halftime lead.
The Blazers never looked back, stretching their advantage after the break to claim a comfortable 27-point victory.
Daniel Muganzi was the only UCU player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Kasereka Tembo led the Blazers with 22 points, Innocent Ochera added 21, while Peter Obleng contributed 13 in the dominant win.
The Blazers also won the rebounding battle 44-40, while UCU struggled with ball security, committing 23 turnovers.
Stephen Nyeko’s side now lead the best-of-five series 1-0 and are two wins away from reaching the finals as they bid to successfully defend their league title.
The other semifinal series gets underway on Friday, with City Oilers taking on Rezlife Saints in Game One.
