Kitara FC coach Wasswa Bbosa believes his side can overcome Egyptian giants Al Ahly when the two teams meet in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup round of 32 at Hoima City Stadium today.

The Royals are preparing for one of the biggest tests in their history as they seek to secure a first-leg advantage ahead of the return fixture in Cairo on Sunday, October 25.

Bbosa acknowledges the threat posed by the visitors but insists his players are motivated and ready to compete against the continental heavyweights.

“We respect our opponents. They are an organised side that knows how to handle such tests, but we are playing at home. The boys are well motivated and we believe they will get a positive result that pushes us to the next stage,” Bbosa said.

Kitara are featuring in their second CAF Confederation Cup campaign, having made their debut in 2024 before suffering elimination in the first preliminary round.

Their opponents, however, boast a rich continental pedigree, with a record 25 official CAF interclub titles. Al Ahly last won the Confederation Cup in 2014, while their most recent CAF interclub triumph came in 2024.

Despite the gulf in continental experience, Bbosa is confident his squad has prepared adequately for the encounter.

“We have prepared very well for this game. The squad is in great shape, and we have a good balance of experience that is ready to go toe to toe with our opponents. Our fans should expect an entertaining match at Hoima City Stadium,” he added.

Al Ahly’s last visit to Uganda was in 2018, when they lost 2-0 to KCCA FC at Namboole.

Kitara will be hoping to exploit home advantage and secure a positive result before travelling to Egypt for the decisive second leg, with a place in the group stages at stake.

The Uganda Cup winners beat FC Mogadishu over two legs to reach this stage while the Egyptian giants who finished third in their league last season, received a bye at the previous stage.
