Al Ahly Too Good for Kitara

Kitara FC’s faint hopes of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages came to an end after a 4-0 defeat to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Sunday’s return leg in Cairo.

Having lost 2-1 in the first leg in Hoima last week, Kitara bowed out with a 6-1 aggregate defeat as Al Ahly advanced to the group stages.

Hussein El Shahat scored twice, while Mohammed Magdy Afsha and Taher Mohammed added a goal each in a commanding performance by the hosts.

Al Ahly broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa’s punch fell to El Shahat, who lobbed the ball into the net.

Afsha doubled the hosts’ advantage just before halftime after capitalising on a hesitation by Murushid Juuko, who was attempting to play a back pass.

El Shahat grabbed his second goal six minutes into the second half, firing into the near post before Taher Mohammed completed the rout in the 68th minute with a powerful header from a well-weighted cross.

Al Ahly’s progress was hardly surprising given their pedigree on the continent. The Egyptian giants won the CAF Confederation Cup in 2014 and have a record 15 CAF Champions League titles.

Kitara will have to wait another season to pursue their dream of reaching the group stages but can take pride in their continental adventure, which saw them face one of Africa’s most successful clubs.

Wasswa Bbosa’s side reached this stage after eliminating Somalia’s FC Mogadishu in the previous round.
