Kiplimo third as Sawe breaks World Record at London Marathon

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo finished third, breaking his own National Record at the historic 2026 London Marathon where records were shattered!

But Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe grabs the top headlines in a race he won with a World record, and become the first man to run a sub-two hour marathon in a proper race.

Sawe clocked 1:59:30, chopping 65 seconds off the previous record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kevin Kipruto in Chicago in 2023!

The time also surpasses Eliud Kipchoge’s 1:59:41 set in an exhibition event back in 2019.

Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha came second on his debut, crossing the line in 1:59:41, also under two hours!

Kiplimo came third in a time of 2:00:28, also bettering the previous World Record. Kiplimo’s time breaks Uganda’s National Record which he set of 2:02:23 last year at the Chicago Marathon.

Joshua Cheptegei, the other Ugandan in the race, came 12th on his London debut in a time of 2:06:39.

In the women’s event earlier, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa broke the Women-only World Record after clocking 2:15:41, taking nine seconds off her own previous best.

Assefa held that record, having clocked 2:15:50, back at the 2025 London Marathon.

Kenyan duo Hellen Obiri (2:15:53) and Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:15:55) followed closely in second and third respectively.
