Lugazi were left fuming after a controversial refereeing decision in their 2-1 Uganda Premier League defeat to Kitara on Saturday at Najjembe.

With the game level at 1-1 in the 86th minute, Lugazi were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty and a chance to take the lead.

Referee Lucky Kasalirwe waved play on after Kitara defender Henry Musisi brought down Alvin Birungi inside the box in the 87th minute.

From there, Kitara launched a quick attack, Lugazi defender Richard Ayiko pulled down Kitara forward Edson Agondeze and was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.

Kitara made the most of their numerical advantage. A long ball from defender Kato Samuel Nemeyimana was headed on by Agondeze into the path of Shaban Muhamad, who calmly slotted past goalkeeper Allan Batali Igama.

It was a dramatic finish for Kitara, who had earlier taken the lead in the 30th minute when Patrick Kaddu headed home from Gaddafi Wahab’s well-delivered free kick.

Lugazi had responded brilliantly, with Paul Busolo in the right place to tap in Freedom Mungudit’s sweeping cross in the 82nd minute.

At the final whistle, tempers flared as Lugazi players confronted the match officials over decisions they felt had gone against them.

Lugazi forward Alfred Leku reportedly kicked the door to the referee’s dressing room before throwing a bottle of water inside, according to an eyewitness.

Kitara remain third on the table with 51 points, level with second-placed KCCA but four points behind leaders Vipers, who still have a game in hand.

Lugazi sit 13th in the 16-team standings with 25 points, five above the relegation zone with five matches remaining.
