EXCLUSIVE: FUFA DEMANDS CAF A LICENCE FOR UPL ASSISTANT COACHES

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is introducing stricter coaching requirements for the Uganda Premier League.

Effective 2026/27 season, Assistant Coaches will now be required to hold at least a CAF A Licence, SportsNation Uganda can exclusively confirm.

According to the new directive, all top-flight clubs will be expected to ensure that their assistant coaches meet the minimum CAF A qualification standard, or risk missing a license to take part in the season.

This comes just a season after clubs were instructed to appoint head coaches with at least a CAF A Licence, while assistants were required to possess a minimum of CAF B Licence.

FUFA has repeatedly said that the Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) coaching framework is central to their ongoing efforts to professionalize the domestic game and raise technical standards within the league.

However, concerns have already emerged regarding compliance with the current regulations in the 2025/26 season.

Some clubs exploited loopholes by appointing CAF A licensed head coaches in name, while their assistants—who lack the required qualifications—handled most of the actual coaching duties.

One example that can be cited is Kitara FC, where Wasswa Bbosa was demoted to assistant coach due to his lack of a CAF A License.

Despite the appointment of George Lutalo, who holds the required qualification, it is alleged that Bbosa continues to oversee key coaching responsibilities behind the scenes.

The FUFA Club Licensing Committee believes that the upcoming enforcement will close such loopholes and ensure that officially appointed technical staff are the ones actively executing coaching duties.

The measure is expected to improve the quality and competitiveness of the league, while also aligning Ugandan football with CAF’s broader professional coaching standards.

The policy is also expected to encourage more local coaches to upgrade their qualifications and pursue higher coaching certifications.

Uganda currently has 41 CAF A licensed coaches (list yet to be updated by FUFA), although a number of them are not actively employed in the top flight. These include Charles Ayiekho, Morley Byekwaso, Sam Ssimbwa, and Moses Basena among others.
