Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, after mutually agreeing with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his contract.
The Portuguese tactician confirmed the development in a statement, explaining that both parties reached the decision following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, with the interests of Ghanaian football taking priority.
Queiroz took charge of the Black Stars in April 2026 and initially departed after the 2026 FIFA World Cup before being reinstated on September 2.
However, his return to the dugout was followed by a difficult start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars losing both of their opening matches.
Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast before falling 4-2 to Gambia, results that added to the circumstances surrounding his departure.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” Queiroz stated.
The former Manchester United assistant coach expressed gratitude to the GFA, particularly its president, for the opportunity to lead the Black Stars, while also thanking his technical team and everyone who supported the project, especially during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He also paid tribute to the players, urging Ghanaians to continue supporting the current generation, which he believes has the talent and potential to achieve great things.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them. The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana,” he added.
Queiroz also thanked Ghanaian fans for their passion, support and warmth, saying he would always remember the country with respect and affection.
He concluded his statement with a message that summed up his time with the national team: “Ghana comes first. The Black Stars come first.”
