Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai claimed bronze in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
It was a night of mixed emotions for the Olympic champion, who will feel she missed out on gold after leading the race for much of the contest, including the final three laps.
However, on the final lap, Chemutai was overtaken by England’s Elise Thorner, who produced a strong finish to take silver, while Kenya’s Faith Cherotich powered to gold.
The bronze medal marks back-to-back Commonwealth Games podium finishes for Chemutai, having also finished third at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
Chemutai rose to global prominence at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she won Uganda’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics after triumphing in the 3000m Steeplechase.
She later added silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics and another silver medal at the 2024 African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Cherotich won gold in a Commonwealth Games record time of 9:01.76, smashing the previous mark of 9:15.68 set by fellow Kenyan Jackline Chepkoech in Birmingham 2022.
However, Cherotich’s winning time remained outside the world record of 8:44.32, set by Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech at the Monaco Diamond League.
