Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes, began their 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign with an impressive 59-50 victory over Wales in a thrilling Pool match in Glasgow on Saturday.
The She Cranes came from behind after trailing 31-28 at halftime, having faced a five-goal deficit during the second quarter.
Mary Nuba Cholhok sparked Uganda’s comeback by scoring three consecutive goals early in the third quarter, before the She Cranes produced a decisive 5-0 run to seize control of the contest. Uganda entered the final quarter with a 45-39 advantage.
Despite a few turnovers late in the game, the She Cranes maintained their composure to secure victory at the final buzzer, delighting the Ugandan fans in attendance, including National Council of Sports (NCS) chairman Ambrose Tashobya.
Goal Attacker Shadiah Nassanga was flawless under the post, scoring 27 goals from 27 attempts, while Goal Shooter Mary Nuba Cholhok added 23 goals.
Alice Isoto contributed nine goals before making way for Nuba.
Centre Margaret Baagala made a significant impact off the bench with 21 assists and an interception, while Wing Attackers Rachael Nanyonga and Joan Ryekoboth registered 10 assists each.
Georgia Rowe led Wales with 31 goals, but her efforts were not enough as the world number seven side fell to sixth-ranked Uganda.
Coached by Rashid Mubiru, the She Cranes return to action on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago before taking on Jamaica, New Zealand and Scotland in their remaining pool matches.
