Elijah Luutu claimed his first major championship title on Sunday after holding off a late challenge from Joseph Bagabo to win the Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Open at Uganda Golf Club.
Luutu entered the tournament without expectations of lifting the trophy, but a composed performance across the two rounds saw him emerge victorious after a weather-disrupted finish.
The tournament was scheduled to conclude on Saturday, but heavy rain and poor visibility forced officials to suspend play, pushing the final round into Sunday morning.
Luutu had opened with a level-par 72 on Friday to establish an early advantage. Bagabo, however, steadily closed the gap on Saturday and was just two shots behind when play was halted.
Hassan Pirani also entered the title race after moving to within one shot of Luutu. But his challenge faded on the 16th hole when an out-of-bounds shot effectively ended his hopes, leaving Bagabo as Luutu’s main challenger.
The contest went down to the final hole.
Luutu made par on the 17th, while Bagabo birdied to draw level heading into the 18th.
Bagabo then missed the fairway with his tee shot before sending his approach out of bounds from the rough. He eventually carded a double bogey, while Luutu safely made par to seal the championship.
“I didn’t feel the pressure,” Luutu said after his victory.
The champion admitted that winning was not part of his initial plans when he arrived at the club.
“It was quite a surprise to me. I came simply to play the tournament. I wasn’t coming to win it.”
Luutu said maintaining his focus rather than following the leaderboard helped him stay composed throughout the competition.
“On day one, I didn’t even look at the scores. On day two it was almost the same thing. I just stuck to the plan and continued playing.”
He also credited his ability to remain calm when play was interrupted by the weather.
“The rain didn’t affect me. I stayed cool and came to play my game.”
In the Senior Ladies category, Catherine Pavie successfully defended her title after finishing two strokes ahead of Azuba.
The Jinja-based golfer carded 92 in the final round for a gross total of 177. Azuba posted the better final-round score of 91 but could only finish on 179.
Pavie therefore retained the championship she won last year in Lugazi.
Johnnie Walker East Africa Brand Manager Christine Kyokunda praised the seniors for their continued participation and competitiveness.
“It has been good to see the seniors keep walking and keep competing. There has been some really good golf over the last few days, and we are happy to be part of a championship that gives these players the opportunity to come out, compete and enjoy the game,” Kyokunda said.
Away from the golf course, the 19th Hole experience was held on Saturday evening as scheduled, with singer Winnie Nwagi providing the entertainment.
The event also featured a personalised gifting experience, allowing revellers to purchase Johnnie Walker bottles and have their names engraved on them.
Attention now shifts to the main Johnnie Walker Uganda Open, with the Amateur Open scheduled for August 26-29 at Uganda Golf Club.
