Preparations for the highly anticipated Buganda Royal Regatta, locally known as Empaka z’Amaato ga Kabaka, have gathered momentum.
The event’s organizing committee completed an extensive inspection and preparation exercise at Bunjako Beach ahead of the grand finale scheduled for August 22, 2026.
The inspection was led by Engineer Ben Misagga, Chairperson of the Buganda Royal Regatta, alongside members of the organizing committee, who spent the day assessing and preparing the venue to ensure it is ready to host thousands of spectators and participants.
Speaking during the preparations, Engineer Misagga said the committee is focused on delivering a well-organized and memorable event.
“We are here to prepare and organise the venue in order to accommodate all the patrons who are going to watch the final of the 18 counties of Buganda. The organisation is very good. All 18 counties are going to be represented with pomp, and I urge everyone to be on time on August 22.”
“We are putting up the treasure hunt, and make sure that on D-day, look for where it’s hidden,” he said.
The regatta will feature competitors representing all 18 counties of Buganda, battling for top honours, substantial cash prizes, and other gifts in what organizers expect to be one of the biggest editions of the event.
Organizers have also lined up several attractions for spectators, including a treasure hunt, where the first 100 fans to discover hidden coupons buried in the sand will stand a chance to win prizes such as motorcycles, mobile phones, and other gifts.
The day-long event will also feature live music and entertainment, creating a festive atmosphere for families and sports enthusiasts.
Security arrangements are being coordinated by Collins Ssemanda, while technical aspects of the competition are being overseen by Nakisozi Batenga of the Uganda Rowing Federation to ensure the races are conducted professionally.
Although not officially confirmed, His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi may attend the event, adding to the excitement surrounding this year’s championship.
The Buganda Royal Regatta finals will take place at Bunjako Beach, Buwama, on Saturday, August 22, 2026. Gates will open at 8:00 a.m., with the main competition beginning at 9:00 a.m. Entry has been set at UGX 10,000.
