Former footballers – under their umbrella body the former footballers initiative – on Sunday joined students, alumni and members of the community for the second edition of the Tambula Mengo Run, combining fitness with a show of support for Mengo Senior School.
The 10-kilometre run started and finished at Mengo Senior School along Hoima Road, running from 6:30am to 10:00am. The event was also flagged off by the Archbishop.
The school organises the annual run to raise funds towards the construction of a mega dining hall, a project aimed at improving facilities for its students.

Among the former footballers who took part were Jimmy Ssekandi, Richard Makumbi, Edward Baguma, Vincent Luganda, Resty Nantumbwe, Nakanwagi, Kenny Lubogo and Vincent Ssemanobe.
Walusimbi Wooto, who heads communications for the Former Footballers Initiative, said the participation was also aimed at strengthening the relationship between the former players and the school.
“Mengo is our partner. We organise the medical camp and Mass at the school, and they provide the venue for us free of charge,” Wooto said.

“Being part of their cause is big and important for us. It is also about keeping fit while maintaining our relationships and friendships.”
Samuel Ssemwendo Ssaava from the Mengo Senior School Sports Department thanked everyone who participated in the second edition, saying the run is an important part of the school’s fundraising drive.
“We thank everyone who has joined us for this second edition of the Tambula Mengo Run. It is organised to raise funds towards the construction of a mega dining hall that will have nine floors,” Ssaava said.
“Our students have not had a proper dining hall, and that is why we came up with this initiative. As we speak, we are about to finish the first floor, but the remaining work and funding required are enormous.”

Ssaava said the school hopes to complete the project within three years, with this year’s event marking the second year of the fundraising campaign.
“We hope this run can raise a billion shillings or more. We have also received support from various companies, including MTN, Pearl Bank and Hema, among others,” he added.
Participation was open to anyone who purchased a race kit, although the event primarily targeted current and former students as well as parents.
