UCU Lady Canons were on Sunday crowned 2026 Women’s National Basketball League champions after overcoming JT Lady Jaguars 63-49 at Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The Canons won Game Five to take the best-of-seven finals series 4-1 and reclaim the title.
Matrina Anyango led UCU with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Shilla Lamunu and Zoe Atek added 12 points apiece.
Brenda Kayaga and Maimuna Nabbosa scored 14 points each for JT, while Mercy Batamuliza grabbed 13 rebounds in a losing effort.
UCU had to recover from a 15-12 first-quarter deficit before taking control of the game. They finished strongly, winning the final quarter 17-7 to seal the championship.
JT Lady Jaguars, coached by Sudi Ulanga, had gone into the finals as favourites after topping the regular-season standings and beating UCU twice during the regular season.
However, the Jaguars fell 3-0 behind in the finals and, although they avoided a sweep with a 20-point victory in Game Four, UCU remained in control and closed out the series on Sunday.
The defeat means JT’s wait for a maiden top-flight title continues. The club will compete as Kira Lady Jaguars next season following a rebrand.
For UCU, the victory delivers their ninth Women’s National Basketball League title, extending their record tally and ending a three-year wait for the championship, a period dominated by JKL Lady Dolphins.
