Uganda will be hoping to extend their dominance in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games when the event gets underway on Tuesday in Glasgow.
Team Uganda will be represented by Oscar Chelimo, Samuel Cherop and Dan Kibet.
Uganda has won gold in each of the last five editions of the men’s 10,000m at the Games, underlining their supremacy in the event.
Jacob Kiplimo triumphed in Birmingham in 2022, Joshua Cheptegei won in Gold Coast in 2018, Moses Kipsiro claimed back-to-back titles in Glasgow (2014) and Delhi (2010), while Boniface Kiprop struck gold in Melbourne in 2006.
The last non-Ugandan to win the Commonwealth Games men’s 10,000m title was Kenya’s Wilberforce Talel, who won in Manchester in 2002—a race in which Uganda did not field a competitor.
Chelimo, who won bronze at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, will be aiming for at least a podium finish.
He finished 18th at last year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, posting a time of 29:26.66.
However, Uganda is expected to face stiff competition from Kenya, whose team features Edwin Kurgat, Daniel Ebenyo and Ishmael Kipkurui.
On Monday, Uganda narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s 10,000m final. Esther Chebet finished fourth, Joy Cheptoyek was sixth, while Rebecca Chelangat crossed the line in eighth place.
