VIDEO: Fans Arrested After Violence Abandons Match

Four people have been arrested following crowd violence that led to the abandonment of the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League match between Hardrock FC and Dynamos FC at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the suspects were involved in pitch invasions, destruction of property and fighting among supporters during the match on Sunday.

The violence reportedly started after Hardrock FC were awarded a controversial penalty in the 72nd minute while Dynamos were leading 1-0.

Hardrock converted the penalty to equalise, sparking protests from Dynamos supporters who threw missiles onto the pitch. Rival fans later clashed, forcing officials to abandon the game.

Police said seven supporters were injured and admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital, while stadium infrastructure was also damaged during the chaos.

Meanwhile, Hardrock FC chief executive officer Kudzanai Hove has also been arrested after videos circulated on social media allegedly showing him assaulting a Dynamos supporter during the disturbances.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) condemned the violence and called for discipline among supporters and clubs.

“ZIFA strongly condemns all forms of violence, intimidation and disorder at football matches.

“Football must remain a safe, family-friendly and unifying space for players, officials, supporters, partners and all stakeholders who continue to invest their time, resources and passion into the growth of the game,” the association said in a statement.

ZIFA said disciplinary processes should be allowed to take their course and stressed that football cannot afford to normalise such behaviour.

“The Association supports the Premier Soccer League’s decision to await the full reports from the match officials and the clubs involved before the matter is determined in line with the applicable rules and regulations.

“It is important that due process is followed and that those found responsible for any acts of misconduct face the appropriate sanctions.

“ZIFA wishes to make it clear that there is no place for violence in Zimbabwean football.”

“Supporters are encouraged to back their teams with passion, pride and discipline, while clubs are reminded of their responsibility to help promote order, safety and respect at match venues.”
