Singer Derrick Ddungu, aka Rickman, scored on his Express FC debut to help the Red Eagles beat KCCA FC 2-0 in the Uganda Premier League Kampala Derby on Thursday night at Nakivubo.
Isaac Wagoina opened the scoring before Rickman sealed the victory as Express secured their first win of the season.
KCCA FC looked the better side from the onset but failed to take their chances, while Express struggled to play out from the back.
Shafik Nana Kwikiriza was denied by goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya, who minutes later also kept out Charles Lwanga before Saidi Mayanja rattled the woodwork.
However, Express improved after the break, with Wagoina finding the back of the net six minutes into the second half.
Aaron Mutebi threaded a pass through to Wagoina, who beat Maxwell Owachgiu before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugolofa.
The Red Eagles, who had lost 1-0 to BUL in Njeru in their opening game, defended brilliantly and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
They almost doubled their lead when Henry Wamala was denied by the post after looping the ball over an onrushing Mugolofa.
Express eventually got the icing on the cake through substitute Rickman, just five minutes after coming on for Steven Yiga.
Rickman was not closed down when he received the ball at a tight angle, but he squeezed an effort that eluded Mugolofa at his near post to make it 2-0.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the singer who removed his jersey in joy.
Rickman is playing competitively for the first time since a knee injury prematurely ended his career in 2016 while plying his trade in Sweden, an incident that gave birth to his singing career.
Artiste Bebe Cool, who came to cheer for his son Alpha Thierry Ssali, celebrated the goal loudly. Alpha was taken off in the second half despite promising attacks against his former side KCCA.
The defeat is KCCA FC’s second in as many games after they were beaten 2-0 by NEC FC at Lugogo in their opening match.
