Vipers Sports Club turned down a Shs100 million financial support package from the National Council of Sports (NCS) towards its CAF Champions League campaign.
In a letter dated September 4, 2026, Vipers president Dr Lawrence Mulindwa said the club appreciated the NCS gesture but could not accept the funding because of concerns over fairness and the lack of a clear policy governing financial support to clubs representing Uganda in continental competitions.
Vipers had presented a Shs350 million budget from the NCS to facilitate its CAF Champions League home and away fixtures against Mauritanian side FC Nouadhibou.
According to the club, its request was partly influenced by the support extended to fellow Uganda Premier League side Kitara FC, which had requested Shs200 million on August 25 to facilitate its CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
Vipers noted that the NCS approved Shs150 million for Kitara on the same day, covering 75 percent of the club’s submitted budget.
In contrast, Vipers was offered Shs100 million, representing about 28 percent of its requested budget.
“Vipers Sports Club does appreciate your gesture of support of Ugx. 100,000,000/= covering 28% of its submitted budget, however, in the spirit of transparency, fairness and desire for uniform treatment of clubs representing the country on international assignments, the club respectfully turns down the offer,” Mulindwa wrote.
The club also questioned the absence of clear guidelines on the criteria, eligibility and funding mechanisms for clubs seeking government support for international competitions.
Vipers has asked the NCS to provide guidance on the applicable policies and criteria for accessing such support in future.
Vipers were held to a 1-1 draw against FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania in the first leg on Saturday.
