NEC Dent Kitara’s Title Hopes in Butema

Saturday, May 9
Kitara 0-1 NEC

Kitara wasted a chance to close the gap at the top of the Uganda Premier League after suffering a 1-0 defeat to NEC at Royals Park, Butema.

Richard Basangwa scored the decisive goal for the visitors, denting Kitara’s faint title hopes.

Basangwa headed home from close range after defender Benjamin Nyakoojo’s poor backward header gifted NEC the opportunity.

It was a cheap goal to concede, with Kitara failing to properly clear Hakim Wandera’s free-kick into the area. NEC’s Joseph Sseremba headed the ball goalwards before Nyakoojo fluffed his attempted clearance, allowing Basangwa to punish the mistake.

NEC had earlier come close to opening the scoring, but Joseph Dhata saw his goal-bound effort blocked by Samuel Kato Nemeyimana with the goalkeeper beaten.

The visitors will also have goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo to thank after he produced a brilliant performance, including a crucial save to deny Jimmy Kalema in the 82nd minute.

The result leaves Kitara third on 54 points, missing the chance to cut the deficit at the top to three points with three games remaining.

Kitara had hoped to capitalise on Vipers’ 1-1 draw against URA on Friday at Kitende.

NEC, meanwhile, have now kept 10 consecutive clean sheets and are unbeaten in 17 matches.

They sit fifth on 50 points, with fixtures against Buhimba (H), SC Villa (H) and Calvary (A) still to come.

Kitara, on the other hand, still have to face Express (A), BUL (A) and Police (H).
