City Oilers needed two overtime periods to edge UCU Canons 87-80 in a thrilling National Basketball League clash at YMCA Court in Wandegeya.

The game was tied 63-63 at the end of regulation time and remained deadlocked at 75-75 after the first overtime.

However, the Oilers stepped up in the second overtime, outscoring the Canons 12-5 to seal a hard-fought victory.

UCU will return to Mukono disappointed despite producing an unexpectedly strong performance and feeling they could have wrapped up the game in regulation time.

The Canons stormed to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, forcing the Oilers to play catch-up for most of the contest.

City Oilers needed Fayed Bbaale to convert all three free throws at the end of the fourth quarter to force overtime.

In the first overtime, UCU relied on Jimmy Otim to sink all three of his free throws at the buzzer, which he did in a high-octane encounter.

But the Canons eventually ran out of steam in the second overtime against an Oilers side that was without London-born Jonathan Komagum, who was expected to make his debut.

The Oilers also missed Landry Ndikumana, Joel Lukoji, Isaac Athuai and Rogers Dauna, all sidelined through injury.

Titus Lual recorded a double-double with 27 points and 17 rebounds, while Joel Kayiira added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Fayed Bbaale and Malual Dier contributed 18 and 16 points respectively for City Oilers.

Jimmy Otim scored 31 points for UCU Canons, but his effort was not enough to secure victory. He received limited support, with Zachariah Ekirapa adding 13 points while no other UCU player reached double figures.

City Oilers missed 24 of their 29 three-point attempts but edged the rebounding battle 58-55 to get over the line.

In the women’s division, JT Lady Jaguars defeated KCCA Leopards 61-47 in the first game of the evening.
