Mbale Heroes have officially been relegated from the FUFA Big League.
Following the conclusion of Matchday 27, the club remains rooted to the bottom of the 16-team table with 17 points.
Their fate was all but confirmed after a 1-0 defeat to Onduparaka on Saturday.
FUFA has consequently ruled against the Mbale-based side for failing to honour their away fixture against Nebbi Central, resulting in a further three-point deduction.
In total, Mbale Heroes have lost six points this season, having earlier been punished for failing to fulfil another away fixture against Kigezi HomeBoyz.
With four teams set to be relegated, Mbale Heroes are now 14 points behind safety with only three matches remaining, making survival mathematically impossible.
The relegation caps off a difficult campaign for the club, which has struggled financially throughout the season, with players reportedly going months without pay.
Saturday’s home match against Onduparaka was also marred by controversy after kickoff was delayed amid reports that the club attempted to field players using other players’ licences.
Onduparaka then struck just a minute into the game through Mahad Agussi, whose goal proved enough to seal victory and effectively hammer the final nail in Mbale Heroes’ coffin.
Mbale Heroes will now compete in the Eastern Regional League next season, marking back-to-back relegations following their drop from the Uganda Premier League last campaign.
