Amad Diallo scored a late winner as Ivory Coast began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The match looked set to end goalless until Diallo, who came off the bench, struck in the 90th minute to hand the Elephants all three points in their Group E opener.
Ecuador dominated large parts of the game and created several chances, especially in the first half.
John Yeboah came close with a powerful effort that hit the crossbar, while Alan Minda also struck the woodwork after being played through on goal.
Despite the pressure, Ivory Coast remained organized at the back, with goalkeeper Yahia Fofana producing a composed performance.
The Elephants gradually grew into the match and threatened through Bazoumana Touré and teenager Yan Diomande, who became the first Ivorian teenager to play in a FIFA World Cup match.
The second half produced more chances for both sides. Ecuador captain Enner Valencia hit the post from a tight angle, while Elye Wahi rattled the crossbar for Ivory Coast.
As the game entered the closing stages, Ivory Coast took control and pushed forward in search of a winner.
Their breakthrough finally came in the final minute. Wilfried Singo delivered a dangerous cross from the right and Diallo timed his run perfectly before slotting a left-footed finish past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.
The late goal sparked celebrations among the Ivorian fans and secured a valuable opening win for Emerse Faé’s side.
Ivory Coast now turn their attention to a crucial Group E clash against Germany, while Ecuador will look to bounce back in their next match after failing to convert their chances.
