Ogwang Charges Team Uganda to Defend FEASSA Title in Tanzania

Uganda has set its sights on retaining the FEASSA Games title after Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang challenged Team Uganda to return from Tanzania with medals.

Ogwang made the remarks on Saturday while flagging off the Ugandan delegation for the 2026 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations Games at the National Council of Sports offices.

The minister urged the student-athletes to treat the regional competition as more than just a school event, saying it should provide a pathway into Uganda’s national teams.

“As we win the FEASSA Games, I expect the transition of athletes to represent the national teams. From these students, we must get students who are national team material for the next two or three years,” Ogwang said.

He called on national sports federations to work closely with the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association to identify and develop emerging talent.

Uganda is travelling to Tanzania with one of its biggest delegations, comprising 127 teams from 67 schools.

The contingent includes 1,304 secondary school participants, 160 primary pupils and 72 students from Special Needs Education institutions.

USSSA President Justus Mugisha said the team is heading to Tanzania with the objective of defending Uganda’s regional title, which the country has held for the past five years.

“We are taking these teams to defend the title that we have held for the past five years,” Mugisha said.

The flag-off was also attended by National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Benard Ogwel, who urged the athletes to carry Uganda’s image with pride.

Ogwel congratulated USSSA on its achievements and reminded the students that they are ambassadors of the country.

Ogwang also issued a strong warning on doping, cautioning athletes against using prohibited substances and teachers and officials against facilitating such practices.

“Students, I warn you about anti-doping because you will be banned, and teachers and officials, your punishment is imprisonment,” he warned.

The minister further directed that all buses transporting the delegation be cleared by Uganda Police and the Ministry of Works and Transport, while urging drivers and officials to observe speed limits and regulations governing the number of students carried.

Meanwhile, Senior Education Officer Grace Abalo raised concerns over funding, saying government support to USSSA is no longer sufficient to cover all the association’s championships and programmes.

Team Uganda will now travel to Tanzania for the regional games, with the athletes expected to compete for honours while also seeking to strengthen Uganda’s talent pipeline for future national teams.
