SC Villa sealed a place in the FUFA Super 8 semifinals after overcoming Maroons 3-1 in an emotional second-leg encounter at Nakivubo on Tuesday.
It was the Jogoos’ first game since the death of captain David Owori, who featured in the first leg that ended 1-1.
Owori succumbed to injuries sustained after he was attacked by thugs and was buried on Saturday in Tororo.
Before kick-off, a minute of silence was observed in his memory, followed by a minute of applause in recognition of his contribution to the club.
SC Villa progressed 4-2 on aggregate, with Frank Ssebuufu, Najib Yiga and Andrew Otim scoring for the Jogoos, while Marvin Oshaba was on target for Maroons.
Ssebuufu opened the scoring when he tapped in Geoffrey Lubangakene’s cross after Maroons goalkeeper Amir Nalugoda failed to deal with what appeared to be a routine catch.
Villa doubled their advantage before halftime when Patrick Jonah Kakande beat Kevin Ssekimbega for pace before setting up Najib Yiga, who bundled the ball home.
Andrew Otim added the third in the second half, heading in a well-weighted cross from Reagan Mpande.
Maroons pulled one back through Oshaba, who struck the roof of the net from a tight angle with a powerful right-footed effort, but it was not enough to prevent Villa from progressing.
The victory sets up a semifinal clash between SC Villa and NEC FC, who eliminated Entebbe UPPC.
KCCA FC, meanwhile, have already booked their place in the final after progressing past Kitara in the other semifinal.
