•Uganda 1-0 Libya
Uganda Cranes beat Libya 1-0 on Tuesday to move top of Group H in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the new Hoima City Stadium.
Playing at the stadium for the first time, the Cranes were cheered on by a sizeable crowd that turned up for the historic fixture at the facility, which is earmarked to host next year’s AFCON, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Arnold Vula, one of the seven heritage players recently added to the squad, scored the decisive goal at the stroke of halftime, heading home from a well-delivered free-kick by Allan Okello.
Uganda, despite being second best for much of the night, held on to claim maximum points and move top of Group H with four points from two matches, having drawn 1-1 with Tunisia in their opening game.
Goalkeeper Denis Onyango produced a crucial save in the 25th minute, spreading himself well to deny Ezzedin Elmaremi in a one-on-one situation.
Elmaremi later missed another clear opportunity in the 76th minute, tapping the ball over the bar from close range with the goal at his mercy.
Osama Mukhtar also came close in the 90th minute but headed straight at Onyango.
Paul Put’s side will now turn their attention to two friendly matches against DR Congo in South Africa, scheduled for October 2 and 6.
