Vipers Win FUFA Super Cup

Vipers lifted the FUFA Super Cup after beating rivals Kitara 3-1 on Saturday at Nakivubo Stadium.

The Uganda Premier League champions scored through Odili Chukwuma, Karim Watambala and Gusto Wa Mulongo, while new signing Martin Kizza got Kitara’s consolation goal.

Chukwuma opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, heading home following neat work from Princewill Biweribo Tarabina.

Kitara levelled at the hour mark when Kizza bundled in a rebound after Vipers goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba had spilled Gaddafi Wahab’s effort.

Vipers regained the lead in the 68th minute when Watambala placed the ball into the far corner after a pass from Marvin Youngman.

Gusto put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute, heading in from Farouk Miya’s cross.

Vipers had looked the more dominant side for much of the game and thought they had taken an early lead in the eighth minute through Miya, but the goal was ruled out after Watambala was flagged offside in the build-up.

The victory will boost confidence for Vipers, who failed to progress beyond the group stages of the CECAFA Kagame Cup and now face a demanding season that includes the CAF Champions League qualifiers.

For Kitara, the defeat adds to a disappointing start to the new campaign after they also lost to KCCA FC in the FUFA Super 8 semi-finals.
