World Cup: Morocco impress in draw against Brazil

Morocco and Brazil shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match at the FIFA World Cup, with the North Africans impressing against one of the tournament favourites.

Ismael Saibari gave Morocco a deserved lead in the first half before Vinicius Junior produced a moment of quality to level the scores and secure a point for Brazil.

Morocco capitalised on a costly Brazilian mistake to open the scoring. Lucas Paqueta lost possession in midfield, allowing Brahim Diaz to send Saibari through on goal after defenders Marquinhos and Gabriel were caught out of position.

Goalkeeper Alisson then rushed off his line unnecessarily, and Saibari calmly lifted the ball over him to put Morocco ahead.

The Atlas Lions dominated large periods of the first half with their intensity and organisation, but failed to extend their advantage despite creating the better opportunities.

Brazil equalised in the 32nd minute through Vinicius Junior. The winger collected a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the edge of the area, cut inside onto his right foot and curled a superb shot into the far top corner.

Brazil coach made changes at halftime, introducing Fabinho and Danilo for Casemiro and Roger Ibanez, helping the five-time champions gain greater control after the break.

The South Americans improved significantly in the second half and spent long spells on the front foot, although clear chances remained limited. Their best opportunity came in the 78th minute when Raphinha met a cross from Vinicius, but Morocco held firm.

Both teams became more cautious in the closing stages as the match lost some intensity. Substitute Matheus Cunha nearly snatched a late winner for Brazil, but Morocco defended resolutely to earn a valuable point.

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his team’s performance and the support from their fans.

“I don’t know if only 20 percent of the crowd were Moroccans, but they were very loud,” Ouahbi said. “They made it feel like there were many more of them in the stadium.”

“For the future of Moroccan football, we are confident. We drew and we’re happy. Of course we wanted to win, but I’m proud of the way we played and our courage to keep asking for the ball under pressure. That is one of our greatest qualities.”
