UCU Canons missed the chance to return to winning ways after suffering a 58-56 defeat to KCCA Panthers in a National Basketball League game on Sunday at ABJA Park in Naalya.

The Canons had enjoyed a strong start to the second round, picking up wins against JKL Jaguars, Victoria Crocs and Rezlife.

Their run was halted on Wednesday at the YMCA Court in Wandegeya, where they lost 87-80 to City Oilers after double overtime.

On Sunday, hoping to bounce back, UCU trailed 17-14 after the opening quarter and went into halftime down by nine points.

However, they rallied in the third quarter and reduced the deficit to just one point at 38-37 heading into the final period.

Zachariah Ekirapa and Daniel Muganzi knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give UCU a five-point lead three minutes into the fourth quarter.

But KCCA responded strongly and tied the game at 51-51 through Stephen Otoa’s lay-up with two minutes remaining.

After the lead changed hands several times, KCCA scored five points from the free-throw line to seal a hard-fought victory.

Stanley Mugerwa delivered a dominant double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Panthers.

Alier Perch added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Jimmy Otim and Ekirapa contributed 14 and 12 points respectively.

The victory was KCCA Panthers’ ninth in 16 games this season. They also beat UCU Canons 85-81 in the first-round meeting on March 22.
