UCU Lady Canons defeated KCCA Leopards 79-71 to take a 1-0 lead in their National Basketball League women’s semifinal playoff series on Wednesday at Lugogo.
The Lady Canons edged the opening quarter 23-20 and never relinquished their advantage for the rest of the contest.
Sylvia Nakituuka led UCU with 21 points, while Sylvia Nantongo and Zoe Atek added 20 and 11 points respectively.
For KCCA, Tracy Namugosa scored a game-high 23 points, with Zainah Lokwameri and Sherinah Mwenyango contributing 13 and 10 points respectively.
Despite missing head coach Nicholas Natuhereza, UCU dominated the bench scoring 48-16 and won the rebounding battle 47-39.
KCCA, coached by Namuwongo Blazers guard Tonny Drileba, committed 27 turnovers, a costly factor in the defeat.
The Lady Canons now lead the best-of-five semifinal series 1-0 and are two victories away from reaching the finals.
UCU are chasing their first league title since 2022, with JKL Lady Dolphins having won the previous three championships before being eliminated this season.
The other women’s semifinal series gets underway on Friday at Lugogo, with JT Lady Jaguars taking on Magic Stormers in Game One.
