Uganda’s national boxing team has learnt its opponents for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Bombers will be represented by six boxers, led by team captain Batte Nuuhu.
The team also includes Emily Nakalema, Angel Katushabe, Aziz Ringo, Alfred Ojok and Ibrahim Khemis.
Boxing events will be held at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, with three Ugandan boxers starting at the quarterfinal stage, just one victory away from securing a place in the medal bracket.
Emily Nakalema, competing in the women’s 65kg welterweight category, will face Australia’s Eve Bryson in the quarterfinals.
Angel Katushabe, who will compete in the women’s flyweight 51kg category, also starts at the quarterfinal stage.
Her opponent is yet to be confirmed after receiving a bye in the round of 16. She will face the winner between England’s Ruby White and South Africa’s Thandolwethu TrueloThomathiba.
Aziz Ringo will take on England’s Thomas Damar in the men’s heavyweight 92kg category.
The other three Ugandan boxers will begin their campaigns at the round of 32.
Alfred Ojok, competing in the men’s light heavyweight 80kg category, faces Anitelea Launiu of Niue, while captain Batte Nuuhu takes on Nigeria’s Wahab Abdul in the men’s welterweight 65kg category.
Ibrahim Khemis will battle Zambia’s Albert Ngulube in the men’s lightweight 60kg division.
Uganda’s boxing team will be hoping to end a long wait for a Commonwealth Games gold medal, with the country’s last triumph coming in 1990 when Justin Juuko and Godfrey Nyakana won gold in Auckland, New Zealand.
At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Teddy Nakimuli won bronze among the six Ugandan boxers who competed, alongside Jonathan Kyobe, Joshua Tukamuhebwa, Owen Kibira, Isaac Ssenyange and Yusuf Nkobeza.
Juma Miiro also won bronze in 2018, while Fazil Juma Kaggwa and Michael Ssekabembe claimed bronze medals in 2014. Uganda did not field a boxer at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
