Uganda’s boxing captain, Nuhu Batte, bowed out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday night after losing on points to England’s Patris Mughalzai in the quarterfinals at the Scottish Events Centre.
Despite the defeat, Batte leaves Glasgow with an impressive campaign, having registered two victories during the tournament. He opened his campaign with a round of 32 victory over Nigeria’s Abdulwahab Abdulramon before eliminating India’s Yadav Pratap in the round of 16 to book his place in the last eight.
Uganda’s first female boxer to compete at the Games, Emily Nakalema, also saw her campaign come to an end after losing on points to Australia’s Bryson Eve.
“I tried my best but unfortunately couldn’t secure progression,” Nakalema said after the bout.
While Batte and Nakalema have completed their campaigns, attention has now shifted to Uganda’s most anticipated boxer of the Games, super heavyweight Aziz Abdul, popularly known as Ringo.
The grandson of Uganda’s former President Idi Amin Dada has attracted widespread interest both at home and abroad, with fans eagerly awaiting his first appearance in Glasgow.
“Ba ssebo, when is Aziz fighting, temubanga mwamujeko,” Ugandan football goalkeeping coach Billy Kiggundu posted on social media in Luganda, reflecting the excitement surrounding Ringo’s debut.
That wait ends tonight when Ringo takes on England’s Damar Thomas in a highly anticipated super heavyweight quarterfinal.
“I have waited a long time for this and I am happy that my time has come. I promise to give it my best, for God and my country,” Ringo said ahead of the contest.
His boxing journey has often drawn comparisons to that of his grandfather, Idi Amin, who was himself a celebrated boxer and famously believed that the surest way to settle any doubts about the outcome of a fight was to win by knockout.
Also representing Uganda tonight will be Angel Katushabe, who faces England’s Ruby White in a women’s flyweight (51kg) quarterfinal as the Bombers continue their pursuit of medals at the Commonwealth Games.
