Construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City has reached about 80 percent completion, according to State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang, who says the project is progressing ahead of schedule.
Ogwang made the remarks after inspecting the ongoing construction works at the stadium and the Lira University Training Pitch in Lira City.
He was accompanied by Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Hon. Sam Engola, the Lira City Resident City Commissioner, the Lira District LC5 Chairperson, the Mayor of Lira City and other city and district leaders.
Ogwang said he was pleased with the progress of the Akii-Bua project, noting that the 20,000-seater facility was steadily taking shape.
“I am pleased to report that works at Akii-Bua are ahead of schedule with overall progress now at about 80%,” Ogwang said.
The stadium complex includes the main stadium, an indoor arena, swimming pool, clubhouse, hostel, tennis facilities and training pitches.
According to Ogwang, the government is working closely with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ensure that the facilities meet the required international standards.
He also called on private investors to tap into the growing opportunities created by the sports infrastructure by investing in quality four- and five-star hotels in Lira City.
Ogwang said additional high-quality accommodation facilities would complement the sports infrastructure and support the city’s potential to host major sporting events.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing modern sports facilities across the country, saying Uganda remains focused on delivering world-class sports infrastructure.
The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to become one of the major sporting facilities in northern Uganda and further strengthen Lira City’s capacity to host national and international sporting events.
The stadium is on standby for the 2027 AFCON which Uganda is co-hosting with Kenya and Tanzania
