Agnes Nabukenya was among the four winners as the Fortebet Real Stars Awards continued to recognise sporting excellence.
The Kawempe Muslim striker was named the Best Player for August after captaining her side to the CECAFA Women’s Club Championship triumph.
Nabukenya scored the only goal as Kawempe Muslim edged Kenya Police Bullets in the final in Kigali, helping her side become the first Ugandan team to qualify for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.
She beat KCCA FC midfielder Saidi Mayanja and NEC forward Richard Basangwa to the accolade.
At the awards ceremony held at Nanjing Restaurant in Kololo, Kampala, Nabukenya said, “I am very grateful that God has enabled me to win this accolade. It is a result of giving everything and is a big push for me together with my fellow players.”
Kawempe Muslim head coach Ayub Khalifah also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his 25-year coaching career, much of which has been dedicated to nurturing female football players. The accolade was presented to him by Fortebet representative Resty Mbatidde Namugema.
In other sporting disciplines, UCU Lady Canons star Martrina Anyango was voted the Best Women’s Basketball Player for August after beating JT Lady Jaguars guard Brenda Kayaga and her UCU teammate Zoe Atek.
Anyango was instrumental as UCU defeated JT Lady Jaguars to win the Women’s National Basketball League title, where she was also named the Most Valuable Player.
In men’s basketball, Nyembo Fataki Frank was named the Best Basketball Player of August for his role in leading Namuwongo Blazers to the National Basketball League title.
The Congolese forward edged his teammate Tonny Drilleba and City Oilers guard Patrick Rembert to the award.
Namuwongo Blazers defeated City Oilers 4-3 in the series after a decisive Game Seven played in Hoima, successfully defending their National Basketball League title.
