Uganda’s basketball fraternity is mourning the death of former player Ronnie Kasewu.
Kasewu played for more than two decades for the now-defunct Kyambogo Warriors and the national team, the Silverbacks.
He passed away on Friday after being involved in a road accident in Mukono, sources have revealed.
Nicknamed the “Left-Handed Assassin”, Kasewu guided Warriors to two National Basketball League titles in 2009 and 2012. He was also named the NBL MVP in 2009.
Kasewu spent his entire club career with Warriors, joining the side in 1998 while still a Senior Two student at Kyambogo College.
However, life after basketball proved difficult for Kasewu, as he struggled with mental and financial challenges, as well as reported alcoholism, which led to him undergoing rehabilitation.
He remains one of Uganda’s top basketball players of his generation, alongside the likes of Stephen Omony, Norman Blick, Henry Malinga, Ben Komakech and Jimmy Enabu.
Kasewu will be laid to rest on Monday in Kibuku District.
He becomes the latest member of Uganda’s basketball fraternity to pass away this year, following the deaths of former JKL player Jonathan Oketch and St Noa’s Maxine Anyango.
Former referee Kityo Mass also passed away earlier this year.
