Uganda’s 3×3 Women’s basketball team made a perfect start to their Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow after winning all three Group A matches on Friday.
The Gazelles, making their debut at the Games, defeated Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Kenya on the opening day of action.
Coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s team features Melissa Akullu, Jane Asinde, Jamila Nansikombi and Perus Nyamwenge.
Uganda began their campaign with a thrilling 18-17 overtime victory over Jamaica, with Nansikombi sinking the decisive free throw to secure the win.
They followed it up with a dominant display against Cayman Islands, cruising to a 21-7 victory. Akullu led the charge with 10 points and nine rebounds.
In their final game of the day, Uganda comfortably overcame Kenya 21-5, with Asinde contributing 10 points.
Reflecting on the impressive start, Nyamwenge attributed their success to preparation and discipline.
“We did our homework early and stuck to the plan. The discipline to do what we were meant to do in the game got us here,” Nyamwenge said.
“This is a big stage; it’s the first time we are competing here. The preparations have given us confidence in what we are doing.”
The Gazelles will have a rest day on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday against Fiji and Australia in their final Group A matches.
Uganda currently sits second in the standings behind Australia, who lead on points difference, with qualification to the knockout stage within reach.
Group A also includes New Zealand, England, Tonga, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Singapore.
