The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon is set for a major international milestone on Saturday, August 22, when the fifth edition of the race takes place in Kasese.

World Athletics, the global governing body for athletics, will livestream the event on its official YouTube channel, giving viewers around the world an opportunity to follow the race and experience the scenic Rwenzori region.

The global athletics body will deploy its digital team to Kasese to capture and broadcast the action live.

The development makes the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon the first road race in Uganda to be livestreamed on the World Athletics global digital platform.

Marathon team lead Amos Wekesa says the decision is a recognition of the growth and progress the event has made since it was launched.

“Many strides have been made to get the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon to this level. The livestream is beyond the race itself. It will showcase the beauty and tourism appeal of the area, creating a platform that will put the region on the global map,” Wekesa said.

The Kasese-based marathon now joins a select group of major international road races that have received live coverage on World Athletics’ digital platforms, including the TCS Sydney Marathon, TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Valencia Marathon and Cape Town Marathon.

Tusker Lite Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, Sandra Againe, says the brand is proud to have supported the marathon’s growth and its emergence as an internationally recognised event.

“Tusker Lite has always believed in the potential of this event and what it can do for Kasese and Uganda as a whole. We are happy to be part of the journey and to see the marathon grow from strength to strength. The World Athletics livestream is another exciting milestone,” Againe said.

Organisers are targeting 8,000 runners for this year’s edition, with participants from more than 20 countries already registered.
