Kitara FC scored a late equaliser to deny SC Villa maximum points in their 2026/27 Uganda Premier League opener on Saturday at Wankulukuku.
SC Villa looked on course for victory after taking an early lead through Andrew Okumu, who headed home from close range.
Geoffrey Gagganga’s free-kick was headed back into the danger area, finding an unmarked Okumu, who made no mistake from close range just six minutes into the game.
Villa had a chance to double their advantage when Patrick Jonah Kakande weaved through the Kitara defence before picking out Reagan Mpande, but the forward failed to beat the goalkeeper with a good chance.
Kitara, who defeated Villa in the Uganda Cup final last season, came close to levelling when David Lukwago spilled a cross, but Living Kabon’s effort rattled the post.
The Royals, however, eventually found their equaliser in added time when substitute Crispus Asiki rose highest to head home Kabon’s well-weighted free-kick.
The result was a deserved point for Kitara, who dominated much of the second half, while Villa will rue their failure to maintain their intensity after the break.
It was a painful ending for Villa, and an indicator of what promises to be a tough season following the departure of key players including Charles Lwanga, Hassan Mubiru, Elvis Ngonde, and death of captain David Owori.
For Kitara, Coach Wasswa Bbosa will feel proud of the resilience of the boys as they prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup tie against Mogadishu FC.
