Vipers have been bundled out of the CAF Champions League after failing to overcome FC Nouadhibou of Mauritania over two legs.
The Venoms played out a goalless draw in the return leg to bow out on the away-goals rule, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Kitende.
It was an uphill task for Vipers after they failed to capitalise on home advantage last Saturday, conceding an equaliser after Hillary Mukundane had put them in front.
In the return leg, the Venoms struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, as the hosts held on for the result they needed to progress.
Vipers’ hopes of reaching the group stage have gone up in flames once again, with their only appearance at that stage coming in 2022.
The elimination will come as a major disappointment for club president Dr Lawrence Mulindwa, who brought in French coach Denis Lavagne to replace Ivan Minnaert.
Despite adding several new faces, including Princewill Taribo Biweribo, Cesar Manzoki, Farouk Miya, Nicholas Mwere, Joel Sserunjogi and Jacques Mangoba, Vipers could not find a way past Nouadhibou.
Scrutiny will now fall on the technical team, particularly the decisions made during the first leg at Kitende.
And from here, Lavagne will be skating on thin ice.
