Former Uganda Cranes coach Sam Ssimbwa was on Sunday involved in a scuffle in Kazo, a Kampala suburb, in an incident that has sparked questions on social media.
A video circulating online shows Ssimbwa being held by a group of about five men who appeared to be attempting to take him away from the scene.
According to reports reaching this website, Ssimbwa is a landlord in Kazo and the incident is believed to be linked to a dispute involving one of his tenants.
One person who commented on the incident claimed that Ssimbwa wanted a tenant who was preparing to vacate the house to pay the full month’s rent, despite the tenant being only three days into the new month.
The source further alleged that the disagreement escalated into a confrontation, with the group attempting to facilitate the tenant’s departure with his belongings.
SportsNation has been unable to independently verify the circumstances surrounding the incident or establish exactly what triggered the confrontation.
Ssimbwa, however, has since been seen with a bandage around his head, suggesting that he sustained injuries during the incident.
The incident comes at a time when concerns over violence and mob justice have grown following the deaths and attacks involving several figures linked to Uganda’s sports and entertainment fraternity.
Rugby player Sydney Gongodyo was recently killed in an incident reportedly linked to mob justice, while former Express FC player, SC Villa trustee and Afrigo Band lead singer Moses Matovu was killed last month. Former SC Villa captain David Owori was also killed after he was attacked by thugs.
The circumstances surrounding Ssimbwa’s incident remain unclear, and further details are expected as accounts from those involved emerge.
