Ssenyondo on KCCA’s performance, youngsters, team news ahead of UPDF

KCCA FC head coach Brian Ssenyondo says his team must improve its performances despite a recent upturn in results as they prepare to host UPDF FC at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Thursday.

The Kasasiro Boys are targeting a fourth consecutive victory after recovering from a shaky start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League campaign.

KCCA failed to win their opening three matches, drawing against Kigezi Homeboyz after defeats to NEC FC and Express FC. However, they have since registered victories over Kataka FC, URA FC and Ntugasaze FC.

Ssenyondo is pleased with the turnaround but insists his players are yet to reach the level he expects.

“We are happy with the results because they keep us going up the table and keep our target of winning the championship this season alive. The wins are very important,” Ssenyondo stated.

“The way we perform is yet to reach our expectations, though, and I believe we can do better than that. We are looking to improve our performance and keep scoring more goals so that we can produce better results.”

KCCA are seventh on the table with 10 points, and victory against UPDF could lift them to fourth place, depending on other results.

Ssenyondo believes consistency in both performances and results will be crucial if the 13-time league champions are to challenge for the title.

“When you want to be a champion, you have to be very consistent in performance and results. If we can keep doing this, the better for us, and that will push us towards our goal,” he added.

KCCA will welcome back winger Shafic Nana Kwikiriza for the UPDF encounter, while goalkeeper Anthony Emojong remains sidelined.

Ssenyondo also praised the club’s young players, including Fahad Ismail and Trevor Mubiru, who have been given opportunities in recent matches. Mubiru made a cameo appearance in the victory over Ntugasaze, while Ismail made his second start.

“It’s a culture of the club, and we cherish young blood. It’s in me to give the young boys a chance because the potential is there. Once you are good enough, you are able enough,” Ssenyondo said.

“I believe the young boy Trevor Mubiru did justice to the minutes he got. Fahad Ismail, this was his second start, and he also had a good outing. We will keep giving them a chance.”

UPDF, coached by Hussein Mbalangu, sit 10th with eight points and head to Lugogo on the back of a 2-1 victory over Express FC.

Despite facing his former side, Ssenyondo insists KCCA will focus on their own approach rather than dwell too much on the opposition.

“We don’t want to dwell on the opposition so much. We want to focus more on what we can do best. If we come out and play our way, attack with the right intensity and tempo, we are the better team and can beat anyone on the day,” he said.

“It’s all about us, not the opponent. We respect them; they can harm us. We just have to do what we are supposed to do. They are tough, but we are tougher. We want to win so badly every game we play.”

Thursday’s encounter will see Ssenyondo face a club he coached between 2021 and 2023. He guided UPDF to a 10th-place finish with 37 points in his first season before narrowly avoiding relegation in his final campaign, surviving by just two points.
